Could Your Next Computer Be a Pair of Glasses?

Rayban x Meta glasses Generazione 2 con lenti Polaroid, wayfarer

Imagine checking directions or exploring a digital world through something you wear on your face. An exhibition at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, explores how this idea has developed over decades. Called “Extended Reality: Visions of the Future,” it opened on October 1 and runs until March 28, 2027. It brings together more than 100 devices and objects, from early experiments in the 1960s to modern smart glasses. Visitors can see Google Glass prototypes, Nintendo’s Virtual Boy and newer wearable computers. The exhibition covers virtual reality, which surrounds users with a digital environment, and augmented reality, which adds digital information to their view of the real world. It also explores how artificial intelligence can help devices understand images, speech and their surroundings.

These inventions raise an interesting question: what would make us comfortable wearing a computer every day? Useful features are only part of the answer. Glasses would also need to suit our routines, personal style and budgets. Imagine a student practising English with helpful words appearing beside everyday objects, or a traveller following directions while keeping their hands free. These are possibilities to consider, rather than promises about every device on display. Visitors can follow a timeline of inventions, hear interviews with technology pioneers and try selected systems during special demonstrations. Looking at older designs also offers a reminder that new ideas often take many attempts to develop. The exhibition invites us to consider which tasks wearable computers might make easier and when we would prefer to put them away.
