Shorter Legs May Give Sled Dogs a Pulling Advantage

Sled dogs

Long legs may be useful for running, but shorter legs could offer a different advantage: pulling a heavy sled. A study published on October 14 suggests that sled dogs have body proportions that help them perform this demanding task. Researchers compared the skeletons of 60 animals, including sled dogs, other dogs and wolves. After allowing for differences in overall body size, they found that certain leg bones in sled dogs were about six per cent shorter on average. The team also developed a model showing how a lower centre of gravity could increase pulling force. When an animal pulls a load, the load tends to tip it backwards. Staying closer to the ground can help the animal remain balanced. This may explain why shorter legs are useful for sled dogs.

Dogs have helped Arctic communities transport supplies and travel between settlements for thousands of years. The researchers also examined ancient dog bones and found that many showed a similar pattern to modern sled dogs. These clues could help scientists identify working dogs from the past, even when no sled equipment survives. However, the researchers are still unsure exactly how this characteristic developed. The discovery offers an interesting starting point for thinking about strengths. We often admire speed, height or size, yet different tasks require different abilities. A feature that seems ordinary may be especially useful in the right situation. Sled dogs invite us to look more closely at animals and appreciate the many ways they have worked alongside people.
